If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat. It’s a scary prospect when you first get the inkling to start a business, launch a website, or create a product or service. Not to worry. You. Are. Not. Alone. Here’s the question you have to ask yourself: Will you allow your fear to paralyze you or will you fight the fear and live your dreams?

When I was a kid my family used to tell me I was fearless. I would talk to anyone. Go anywhere. Do anything. My poor mother, (I can say that now because I have a little girl who is the exact same way)! I’m not sure when it happened exactly, but one day I woke up petrified at the thought of talking to someone. It quite literally made me sick to my stomach to think of “putting myself out there.” Suddenly being me wasn’t enough. I would stumble over my words, the things I said would come across all wrong and embarrassment flooded my face in a moment. How would I ever be successful as a businessman or entrepreneur? Maybe I should just give up now and work for someone else’s dream . . .

Wait?! What am I saying? Work for someone else’s dream? I can’t do that! That’s almost as nauseating!

I had to fight to pick up the phone and make calls to clients, potential clients, and vendors. Worse, I had to avoid the urge to “just send an e-mail.” In the age of technology and media, it is so easy to live in the world of email. However, many of my clients didn’t just want to see my emails fly across their screens; they want to have lunch, sit down for meetings — even talk. I know, crazy, right?

One of mentors recently was speaking on the topic of fear. I found myself playing the idea of stepping out into the unknown in my mind. Instantly images of failing filled my mind’s eye. My chest began to feel tight. My vision began to blur. Tears formed in my eyes. What if I failed? How will family eat? We would, of course, lose the house and become homeless. Sometimes doing something new can feel scary.

So how do you get out of the boat when you are facing the storm of your future? How do you face the storm head on and come out on the other side unscathed? The Best Business Book gives us a picture of hope when we step out:

Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen. Jude 1:24-25 NLT

Not a single one of all the good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true. Joshua 21:45 NLT

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 NLT

But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. Psalms 56:3-5 NLT

Fear of failure can be a paralyzing thing, but I think Jack Canfield, co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, said it best when he said, “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.”

So take a moment. Right now. Close your eyes. Image your life when you are living your dreams. See yourself doing the very thing you wanted . . .

Did you do it? If you didn’t you do it, you are still letting your fears control you. Try again . . .

Remember, EVERYTHING you could ever want is on the other side of your fears.

While working with a client who manages a multi-million dollar company, she showed me the website of a multi-billionaire she idolized. As she began to talk about this amazing person, I had to interrupt her, “Why can’t you BE her?” She dismissed the question with a giggle, “Yeah, maybe someday.” As if to say, “That could never be me.” But why not? And why not today? Sure, there is the financial aspect, but the first step on your way to success is to SEE YOURSELF SUCCESSFUL. Fear is a mindset!

Remember the boat? You know the one you seem to be stuck in. Fear says to look at murky water and the waves. Fear says you can’t walk on water. Fear says stay in the boat. But don’t let fear paralyze you. Fight the fear. Live your dreams and step out of the boat.
